Safety First! The Tailgate Safety Session
Tailgate Safety Sessions have been used by many agencies including our Federal partners, the USDA Forest Service, as well as many of our volunteer leaders. The Tailgate Safety Session is an excellent way to start your day, whether building a bridge or maintaining trail. The Session can set the tone for safety and still have everyone rip-raring to go!
The idea couldn’t be simpler. Prior to hitting the trail, gather everyone around, presumably a tailgate, though a trunk, kiosk, picnic table or patch of ground with work just as well. Once everyone is gathered discuss the project, potential hazards, required safety equipment, and anything else they should know. This time can also be used to ensure that everyone has enough water, proper clothing and footwear, and has signed any necessary documents, particularly the FTA assumption of risk form. Those with specialized training like CPR or chainsaw certification can also be identified.
Â
When going over required safety gear, take the opportunity to pass out the Safety Cards for those that don’t have them, along with any gear that someone requires. When going over the details of the project or hike have the group identify potential hazards and ways to avoid them. This gets the group involved and helps them understand why we are creating a Culture of Safety within FTA.Â
Five minutes at the start of the day, can make the rest of the day safer for all of us. For more information regarding Tailgate Safety Sessions or any Safety related questions please contact David Rohe, FNST Construction Coordinator, at (850) 523-8524 or drohe@fs.fed.us
