The January 2008 issue of Motorhome magazine features an article by Steve Glassman focused on the Ocala National Forest, where he describes the Florida Trail as “a yard-wide leaf-strewn sidewalk through the woods” paved in “oak leaves and pine straw.”

According to the Lakeland Ledger, volunteers from the Heartland Chapter have been building hiking trails at Lake Alfred’s own Mackay Gardens and Lakeside Preserve. It is not yet open to the public but is an important part of Florida history as a preserved part of the Mackay family estate, La Rochelle, dating back to 1915.

The Apalachicola National Forest plans to conduct a 14,000 acre prescribed fire in the Bradwell Bay Wilderness Area in January. The purpose of the prescribed fire is to reduce the wildfire threat for surrounding communities while meeting the needs of Bradwell Bay’s fire-dependent plants and animals.
